Blog Assignmnet Two

For several days, we have viewed the courtroom drama 12 Angry Men. In the film, 11 jurors are convinced that the defendant is guilty; one man is convinced of his innocence. While the evidence appears overwhelmingly against the accused teenager, this one man is able to use the same evidence to steer the others to his way of thinking.

I would like two separate posts.

In the first:
Did this film help you to view the essay/argument in a different way? How? What did you learn in particular that you will bring to the writing process?

In the second post:
I would love to know what you thought of the film. Give me YOUR OPINION (yikes).

  1. Yes, this film helped me view the essay in a different way. It helped me really think about why TJ actually wrote his story because of the one juror who thought the defendant was innocent and then started to get other jurors to think he was innocent too. It made me question if the reason I think TJ wrote his story was actually the reason. I learned to look at situations in a different perspective which is what I will bring to the writing process. From now on I will not just write whatever comes to my mind first; I will take some time to really think about it in a different perspective.

  2. In my opinion, I liked the film even though it was a little hard to understand since it was an old film. I liked it because of the one juror who thought the defendant was innocent managed to prove why he thought the defendant was not guilty with great points. He even persuaded me to think that the defendant was innocent because I had first thought he was guilty. When the guy pulled out the same knife that the defendant supposedly used to kill his father, I started thinking he was innocent. Also when the guy said that it wouldn't make sense for the defendant to go back to the house 3 hours after he killed his father to pick of the knife, I was persuaded that the defendant was not guilty.

  3. Savannah Rose,
Yes, the film helped me view an essay in a different way because of the way that one juror acted. During the preliminary vote, he was the only one of all jurors to plead not guilty. Because he believed that it was unfair to send an eighteen year old boy to the chair with just evidence. This particular part helped me understand the writing process more by showing me that evidence must be supported by something else. Evidence must be shown in a way that you can manipulate the thoughts of your audience and make them your own.

  4. Savannah Rose,
I did enjoy this film because it was entertaining and to my perspective capitivating. I was convinced almost from the beginning that the kid was innocent because I had faith that the juror could prove it. I could feel the emotion in the room, but in my mind there was one flaw. I always enjoy a happing ending; in that case, I wanted to see the judge reveal the verdict to the boy.

  5. Yes, the film helped me view the essay in a different way because of the emphasis on seeing both perspectives of a disagreement. You cannot just have evidence and use it one way, you have to see if you can use it another way, kind of like how the jurors used the knife. The film helped me realize that when you write an essay where you have to prove an argument you should look at both sides of the argument.

  6. I liked the film, but it was a little bit disappointing. I expected more action and to see more than the same room throughout the whole movie. But, it was keeps you entertained and it makes you want to be in it arguing with the jurors. Also, I agree with Savannah that they should have shown the boy being told the jury's decision.

  7. Yes, the film did help me view the essay in a different way. It taught me that there are two sides to every argument, and that both sides have strong beliefs and feelings for what they believe. I learned that you can’t always just say that someone is guilty or not guilty, you have to have evidence to back it up. That is just like in an essay, you can’t just say random sentences, you have to have a topic, and with that topic you have to have other statements to support what you are saying.

  8. The film did help me view essay writing in a different way. Evidence (quotes) are key to writing a good essay, just like how they help a court case. You also need to be open to change, not stuck to one side all the time. A good essay, like a good court room, also needs to have a strong base (thesis or opening statement) because that will help the reader/juror more and give them a better view on the situation. Also a good arguement/being interesting is key because it catches attention

  9. It is not like the films that we watch everyday, with the boy trouble, or all of the action scenes, its different. It is nice to sometimes mix it up and try something new. This film made you think. You had to find out which side of the argument you were on; if you thought the boy was guilty or not guilty. You had to put yourself in the place of one of the jurors and listen to the facts. I like that you had to decide something, and actually pay attention to the plot to understand what was going to happen. Over all, I thought that this film was pretty good.

  10. Today I got a glimpse of all the twists and turns inside evidence with more than one point of view. This phenomenon helped to also get a new perspective of a multi-paragraph paper. As a younger student, I saw the essay as a speech: a way that a writer gets what they believe, one view, in type, but now, I have come to realize it is an arguement. An arguement with the same facts that can bend and twist and turn like the body of a boa. After this eye-opening experience, I hope to use this elastic evidence to support what I believe is right and true.

  11. In the 20th century, a film was made called 12 Angry Men. I found this flick both insightful and entertaining. As most know, I hope to become a justice of the judicial system which implies a court movie really caught my attention. What really kept me watching, though, was the way one man was able to manipulate facts so that 11 men changed their verdict without a doubt. I would be happy to see this picture a few more times and revisit the drama in the jury.

  12. I do believe that the movie, 12 Angry Men, did help me understand what the real meaning of an arguement means. This movie taught me why it is so important to support your arguement with evidence. Even if that same evidence was used to support your opposing council. In the past, the evidence in an essay seemed pointless to me because the evidence was so poorley supported. This movie really showed me how to use evidence to make your personal oppinion clear. I also learned that not everything is so black and white. That in some situations, you need to fill in the grey areas. Just like how jury member number 11, aka Davis, did while he convinced his fellow jury members.

  13. I really enjoyed the movie. I liked the story line and the moral message it gave. Not to be a whiner, but I feel if those notes were not so complex I could have payed attention a little bit better, and understood a little bit more. But even with the notes I still enjoyed the movie. The notes actually kept me awake.

  14. The movie helped me to understand how people can use evidence and make it able to lean both ways. I did not get that much out of it because
I was too caught up on taking good notes. I think that if we all watched the movie now that we have taken notes, we will better understand the point trying to be made. I will try to use the information gained from the glimpse of a jury debate to better write my convincing statements that will prove that my evidence is correct.

  15. I loved the film, 12 Angry Men. It really opened my mind to how arguments should be given. This movie was both extremely entertaining and intriguing. I found it interesting in the way that the twelve jurors thought about the specific case. I did not even mind that the movie was in black and white. (The black and white usually drives me crazy when I watch movies.) As it happens, I love arguing about certain points. And the way juror number eleven made his own point, kept me interested in this film.

  16. The film definitely changed my perspective of how to write an essay. This film showed me how detailed you have to be in order to be persuasive to the reader. To make the reader keep reading or wondering for an answer makes a good essay. Not only to you have to have great evidence, but you have to take the evidence and put it outside the box. Think outside of the box. Imagine in your mind what really happened. The truth. Use your imagination of what happened based on facts, not opinions. With more evidence and details in your essay, will make it more truthful and understandable.

  17. In a film called 12 Mad Men, there is a jury of 12 men. One young man defies all odds and argues that a teenager boy is innocent. He proved his point slowly and gradually and finally got to other people. This film actually REALLY did help me on facts about essays and how to prove your point. This proved that even though you may have facts, part of proving a point is opinion and views on different things. The young man used theories, opinions, and wit to prove his case. All of these things would make a great essay if used. In an essay, the quotes would count as the facts and you would have to back up the quotes to prove your point.

  18. I liked the film 12 Angry Men. I thought it was interesting because one man out 11 people could change their minds. I didn't think that was possible. Without good evidence or proof I knew this guy could not stand a chance. But I turned out wrong. The guy convinced all of the 11 men to vote not guilty. This was what I liked about the movie. The notes were kind of hard because I did not know who the jurors names so was confused who I was taking notes on.

  19. Even though the film started out kind of slowly, I really enjoyed the whole idea behind someone fighting for what they believe instead of hopping on the bandwagon. The movie gave a lot of good advice and I enjoyed the movie throughout everything.

  20. I thought this movie was great except i just wish that we could watch it again. I thought it had a great definition of what an essay should do; an essay should convince you, keep you interested, and be argueable.

I thought this movie went great with the essay writing techniques we have been learning in class. In the movie, the main character had to use evidence to prove the boy innocent, just like how we have to use quotes to prove why TJ told his story. I also learned that one piece of evidence can be used for two different sides depending on how one used it.

  22. I honestly enjoyed watching 12 Angry Men, and I definetly agree that it is one of the top 100 movies of all-time. It was interesting how one man convinced eleven others that the accused was innocent. I like the main character because he was really smart when he talked about the evidence. I am planning on watching this movie again in the future because it was very well written and there was great actors.

  23. The lonely man was against eleven convinced men and still succedded to change everyones views. He tought no matter what you see, you can always dig deeper and see the evidence in a different way that a different person presents it. I am definitely going to bring this quality intoi my writing because it very much intreagued me, so I think it would get my audiences attention.

  24. Suprisingly, I actually enjoyed the film with great interest. It got my attention from the very begining and just kept on getting better as we went deeper into the movie. I learned alot of things that I would have never looked at before the film. It had all sorts contributes to the case that made me want to see more. Also, every character had a different personality and different view of the case. Some did not say much or even care, but some were affected by the case and they really got into the decidion of guilty or ,innocent.

  25. This movie did help me to understand how evidence can be universal.the one man uses the same evidence that convinced the other eleven men that the boy was guilty to convince those same me he was innocent. It showed me that arguing evidence a certin way can help me prove my point.

  26. I enjoyed the movie 12 angry men. I thought it was interesting that one man can change the opinion of eleven others. I also thought it was interesting that one man could stand by his opinion so long, epically when he looses all support.

  27. the movie helped me understand that EVERY argument has a contradicting side. it also showed me that any piece of evidence can mean so many things all you have to do is reflect on it. thats what i will bring to my writing more reflection on quotes.

  28. the movie was alright it wasnt great but it wasnt horrible. in my opinion i wish there would have been less yelling and more figuring out the case. I did like the mix of characters and it was interesting to see there viewpoint change throughout the story. Overall i say it was a solid B grade. not bad at all.

  29. Yes, the movie helped me understand that a single bloody glove could be used in many ways. I saw how the man use the same evidence that proved the teenager guilty prove that he was innocent the rest of the jury. He used the same evidence but gave the jury a different prospective to look at it from. So he was just trying to persuade them that there is more than one side to a story. I will use this and think about this when writhing my essay.

  30. Personally I thought the movie was a little bland. I would have liked some more scenery and to get out of the jury room once in a while. The only part that I really liked was when the guy pulled out the exact same switch knife. Everyone's expression was priceless!

  31. Riley Middough,

I learened that the bloody glove could be minipulated to go two different ways. In the movie one man used the same evidence to persude 11 other men to belive that the boy was inecent.I will use this way of perswading the reader in my essay. I wish we could watch it again though, because I feel that I could have gotten more from the movie.

  32. I liked the movie, but I feel like I could have pulled more from the film. I realy did not like how the actors were unclear at points. I also thought that it was plain. Over all I thought that 12 Angry men was a good movie for the time it was produced.
